IELTS Cancellation and Transfer 2026: Why the Five-Week Rule Isn't India's Rule
Search for how to cancel an IELTS test and almost every guide gives you the same answer: five weeks before your date for a refund minus 25%. That figure comes from the old paper-based era, and it is not the rule that applies to a computer-delivered test booked in India.
What applies here is shorter, stricter, and genuinely hard to pin down, because the official sources give three different deadlines. Here is what each one says, why your booking confirmation is the only version that binds you, and how to lose the least money if plans change.
Three Official Numbers, One Question
IDP India's online transfer and cancellation page states you can request a transfer or cancellation only if your test date is at least 9 days away. Refunds are processed within 7 to 10 business days after administrative charges are deducted. On test day or after, nothing is refunded.
IDP India's own application form PDF sets the threshold at 15 days, and states that requests received less than fifteen days before the test date will not be accepted and no refund given.
British Council India says a cancellation or refund request received within three weeks of the test date will not be accepted, with no refund for computer-delivered IELTS.
Those are three thresholds, two of them from the same organisation. We are not going to pretend one is correct. The practical consequence is the useful part: the safe assumption is the longest window, not the shortest. Treat three weeks as your deadline and you clear all three. Treat nine days as your deadline and you may find the form rejected.
Transfer and Cancellation Are Not the Same Thing
A transfer moves your existing fee to a new date, commonly within about three months of the original. Your money stays alive.
A cancellation ends the booking and asks for money back, with administrative charges deducted. In India that deduction is commonly described as around 25%, roughly ₹4,000 to ₹5,000 against the ₹19,000 fee that took effect on 1 April 2026.
If you simply need a different date, transfer rather than cancel. Cancelling and rebooking costs you the administrative deduction for no reason.
One limit worth knowing: British Council allows a test date transfer once. If you transfer, then fall ill before the second date, you are entitled to neither a refund nor a further transfer.
Both Routes Need Supporting Documents
This is where IELTS differs sharply from PTE. A PTE cancellation inside the refund window is self-service and automatic. IDP India requires supporting documents with both transfer and cancellation requests, and every request is subject to approval.
So "I changed my mind" is not the same proposition here as it is on the PTE side, where the tiers apply regardless of reason. Budget time for the approval step and don't assume submitting the form is the same as the request being granted.
Medical and Exceptional Circumstances
If something serious prevents you attending, there is a separate route. It generally requires a refund or transfer request form together with evidence, submitted within about five working days of the test date, and it can produce a partial refund outside the normal windows.
Approval is at the centre's discretion and the decision is final. Submit promptly, since the five-day clock is short and starts at your test date rather than at the point you contact them.
What Happens If You Just Don't Turn Up
You forfeit the entire fee. No refund, no credit, no rescheduled date. That is the single most expensive outcome available, and it is also the easiest to avoid, since even a late cancellation closes the booking cleanly and may still qualify under the exceptional-circumstances route if something genuine occurred.
What This Means for How You Book
Check your own deadline the day you book, not the week you need it. Log in to whichever portal you booked through, find the manage-booking section, and note the exact date your transfer option closes. If the option is greyed out, you are already past it.
Then build the deadline into your planning. If your score has to reach a university by a fixed date, work backwards: institutional deadline, results turnaround, test date, and your transfer cut-off before that. A booking made without knowing its cut-off is a booking you cannot adjust.

Before You Cancel Over the Wrong Booking
Two common reasons for cancelling aren't cancellation problems at all.
If you booked the wrong module, you may be able to switch between Academic and General Training rather than cancel outright. If you booked standard IELTS and your route needs the UKVI version, that is a different fix again, and worth resolving before you forfeit a fee unnecessarily. Ask the centre what changes are possible on your existing booking before assuming cancellation is the only option.
